Lemon Juice and ACV Tonic

Well, daylight savings time is upon us once again, and all I have to say is good riddance to long nights, wool jackets and frozen feet. I seriously don’t think I’ve felt my toes since last November.

In addition to freedom from winter’s wardrobe, I love the feverish hustle and bustle this season brings. Suddenly, empty streets are flooded by cars cruising around with their windows down and previously abandoned parks are full of children playing in the freshly muddied grass. There is nothing more enjoyable than witnessing pure bliss shine on the faces of everyone this time of year. My own included :)

The “recipe” I am sharing with you guys today is more a guided description of a wonderful tonic that I love to drink in the morning. Warm water with lemon juice and apple cider vinegar (ACV, for short).


Establishing a routine in relation to the way you start each day is incredibly important. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, writer, yoga instructor, or small business owner, what you do first thing in the morning matters.

According to the Philosophy of Ayurvedic Medicine, choices that you make regarding your daily routine either build up resistance to disease or tear it down.

Before I was interested in a healthy, holistic lifestyle, I paid no attention to the vinegar aisle in the grocery store. Now, I’m obsessed with vinegar; specifically, apple cider vinegar!

So what’s all the hype about this weight-sucking, grease-cutting, skin-primping vinegar anyway?

It helps with detoxification. It’s believed that apple cider vinegar assists with detoxification by aiding circulation and boosting the liver’s ability to purge toxins. The acids found in apple cider vinegar are believed to be responsible for cleansing effects. The acids help to eliminate impurities by binding to free radicals and other toxins stored in the blood, fat cells and organs, and ‘pulling them out’ of the body. Lately it seems as though everyone is doing a juice cleanse, experimenting with fasting, or living off raw food. Chances are, you’ve seen the ads trying to convince people to pay a small fortune to join a “guided cleanse” at your local health food store. For upwards of $150, you can not-eat not-alone. Not gonna happen.

There’s no reason you can’t do a mini-cleanse every day on your own.

I swoon over coffee… The aroma, the color, the flavor. It just gets me. In more ways than I could possibly list here. But it also gets my nervous system, digestion, and energy – and not in an endearing way.

Oh lemon, how I love you. Let me count the ways…

1. You boost my immune system

Lemons are a great source of Vitamin C (no, not the pop singer) and potassium. Vitamin C is great for fighting colds and potassium stimulates brain and nerve function and helps control blood pressure.

2. You balance my pH

Lemons are an incredibly alkaline food, believe it or not. Yes, they are acidic on their own, but inside our bodies they’re alkaline (the citric acid does not create acidity in the body once metabolized). As you wellness warriors know, an alkaline body is the key to good health.

3. You help aid weight loss

It has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster. And, my experience is that when I start off on the right foot, it’s easier to make better choices for myself throughout the rest of the day.

4. You aid in digestion

The warm water serves to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis – the waves of muscle contractions within the intestinal walls that keep things moving. Lemons and limes are also high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen ama, or toxins, in the digestive tract.

5. You act as a gentle, natural diuretic

Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials because lemons increase the rate of urination in the body. Toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.

6. You help keep my skin clear

The vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well.

7. You hydrate my lymph system

Lemon water helps start the day on a hydrated note, which helps prevent dehydration (obviously) and adrenal fatigue. When your body is dehydrated, or deeply dehydrated (adrenal fatigue) it can’t perform all of its proper functions, which leads to toxic buildup, stress, constipation… the list goes on. Your adrenals happen to be two small glands that sit on top of your kidneys, and along with your thyroid, create energy. They also secrete important hormones, including aldosterone. Aldosterone is a hormone secreted by your adrenals that regulates water levels and the concentration of minerals, like sodium, in your body, helping you stay hydrated. Your adrenals are also responsible for regulating your stress response. So, the bottom line is that you really don’t want to mess with a deep state of dehydration!

Speaking of light, I had so much fun shooting the setup for this post. We had a gloriously sunshiny day last weekend, and the light was coming through our patio door at the perfect angle Saturday morning…


Additionally, the flowers I got Friday night added the perfect pop of color to my background :)


Someone else was taking advantage of the sunshine on this lazy Saturday morning, too…



When I get up close and friendly with the camera he puts his paw over his face as though to say “leave me alone mom, I’m trying to sleep here!”  Too cute :)


Anyway, cute felines aside, if you can only make time for one ritual that will improve your health, let it be this… And remember, no food practice or “quick fix” is a miracle. It’s all part of a balanced diet and having perspective. Making small choices that will stick around long term is the key to tapping into your body’s sweet and awesome natural state. Yields: 1 serving
  • 12-16 ounces warm water (hot water will kill off the enzymes in ACV)
  • Juice of 1/2 to 1 lemon (to taste)
  • 1-2 Tbsp. ACV with “The Mother” (to taste)

    I have started drinking this over the past few months and can hardly drink water with out lemon juice and ACV. I have also discovered Coconut Cider Vinegar. Supposedly better for you than apple even! Smoother taste.

      Hi Gina! I haven’t seen or heard of Coconut Cider Vinegar – thanks for the tip, I will look for it! Always love trying new things (especially when said things are healthy for you!!)
